Under New Ownership: Projects Begin Again
Now that the sale process is winding to a close, the execs are looking anew to reopening projects started in the past and put on hold. The big one that will impact me is a data mart implementation that aggregates revenue data from all of our different business units.
No surprises here - we're talking 5 different ERPs in North America, of varying size, and all mid-tier or below - no SAP or Peoplesoft, so no widely available adapters to leverage. (International will be another adventure, but we'll get the mechanics down first with the North American entities, and approach International with a clearly defined set of technical specifications.
The more interesting part is that we're building our data warehouse capabilities from "scratch" - not home built per se, we'll look to implement the proper tools for a company our size. What's new is that we've never done corporate wide data aggregation before ... well, I suppose the Hyperion consolidated financials sort of count there, but that's a fairly well structured domain (even if the various business units have different charts of accounts ...).
The interesting thing to observe is that the "excitement" is starting to become visible to the rest of the company. Certainly, our IT infrastructure group has been busily decoupling from the old corporate WAN, and the Finance group(s) are still auditing and reporting and all manner of excitement. Still, for the most part, the real changtes haven't begun yet ... but they seem to be coming.
